How can you tell oysters purchased in a grocery store are consumable?

I recently purchased raw oysters from my local grocery store. I shucked at home, each one had a small, lumpy, dark area (like a pearl). I have never seen this before in raw oysters, they did not have a bad smell, smelled perfectly fine; however, I did not eat them. Is this normal?
