Why does it hurt when I use a tampon?

I started my period when I was 11. I am now 19. I don't have regular periods so it could be months before one comes. Every time I try to insert one, it hurts so bad. I tried using tampax pearl regular and it won't even go in all the way. Do they make smaller ones? Could me being a virgin have something to do with it or no?
