Alternative music options for the reception?

I am having a reception either at the lake in a shelter or in a community center. I want to be done with everything by six pm. I am on a very strict budget and other than a DJ, how can you cater to the guests with music? Can I hook up an ipod to my laptop, or what? There will be no dancing or maybe very minimal...more of a social mingling affair with wedding cupcakes and champagne and very light appetizers. Need music help!!!! Thanks
